Alaria's Community Program

Alaria is pleased to announce our selection for the Community Charity Program of the 2010 ING New York City Marathon.

As a sponsored charity organization, we are excited to launch our Community Program, which will provide access to high quality music education and concerts to students and audience members from low-income communities.

The Goals of the Community Program include -

  • To supplement music education in the public schools by providing access to high-level chamber music coaching to students who excel in these programs.

  • To provide master classes by Alaria's core members and guest faculty in schools across the city.

  • To provide subsidized tickets to Alaria's Carnegie Hall concerts.

  • To showcase excelling students of the Community Program at Alaria concerts.

Founded in 1985, Alaria has established itself as a premier ensemble in New York City through exciting performances of well-known, relatively unknown, and newly composed chamber music works and through high-level chamber music coaching. Alaria's performance activities include a program of three concerts a year at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. In these concerts, Alaria seeks to foster the development of new music by pairing compositions by living composers with the better known chamber music repertoire. We have also regularly commissioned new compositions, and sponsor an annual student composition competition.

Alaria's teaching activities take place primarily at the Mannes School of Music, where we are responsible for providing weekly coaching sessions to chamber music groups consisting of music students and serious amateurs. Alaria's members have also taught and performed at international summer festivals in, among other places, Bennington (Vermont), Blue Hill (Maine), Prague, and Wales.
